Bouboulena is a rapper and producer residing in the Lower East Side of NYC for the past 5 years. The name Bouboulena comes from the Greek woman naval commander, ‘Laskarina Bouboulina’, heroine of the Greek War of Independence in 1821. Greece was under slavery for 400 years she helped to lead Greece to her freedom by starting a Naval Fleet. She is the first and only woman to earn the title of ’Naval Commander’ and until this day she is a Greek household name symbolizing strength, independence and female empowerment. As first generation Greek American, Bouboulena received this nickname by her immigrant parents for her tomboyish and independent ways growing up. Today, her message is to empower others to be who they are. “I feel I am a warrior, a modern day one and my battle is to help empower others to learn to live life with NO FEAR leading by example with what Laskarina is remembered for today”. The album title EAST SIDE and cover art set the tone for Bouboulenas’ battle with good and bad. The back of the album cover art representing the good and the front side of the album representing the bad. It was through Bouboulenas’ experience with an encounter with her neighbors, The Hells Angels that changed everything which ultimately ended up being a blessing in disguise.
Throughout Bouboulena’s story, the symbolism and irony run deep, “I know I am in the right place and doing the right thing by looking at the signs, I connect the dots, and nothing has made more sense right now in my whole life”. When you meet Bouboulena, you will first notice her authenticity and that’s why it works.
